Wlérick created this portrait in 1942, when he had just taken Rolande as a model for a standing figure, which he worked on from 1937 to 1941. He executed thirteen preparatory states for his full-length figure, which was acquired by the State in 1944. There are four states of Tête de Rolande, this one, the third, depicts a serious young woman with a haughty bearing; it precedes the final state. This cast was numbered 1/8 and made by the foundryman Lucien Thinot in 1981. It was commissioned by the artist's family and exhibited at the major retrospective of the sculptor held at the Rodin (Paris) and Despiau-Wlérick (Mont-de-Marsan) museums in 1982.
