(bronze proof no. 1/10 of another version). Buste de Jenny, esquisse is one of three sketches made by Wlérick for Buste de Jenny (1943-1944). The first two have a straight head carriage, while the third has a bent head. The final bust was made from the last version. In the sketches, the sculptor researched the head's plumbness and the look, which he later changed. They have been called in the literature the impressionist side of Wlérick's work because their more modelled and passionate writing contrasts with the search for perfection, harmony and purity of the profiles that we see in the final models. They possess the spontaneity of the first draft, embodying the first idea in its raw state. The model, Jenny, had also posed for Pomona, a stone statue presented at the Palais de Chaillot and commissioned for the 1937 Universal Exhibition (1982, cat. exp., p.65-66).
