Louis MOREL (1887-1975) - Lot 11
Louis MOREL (1887-1975) Pierre Joseph Picot de Clorivière (1735-1820) Bust in patinated plaster. Bears the inscriptions Pierre Joseph PICOT de CLORIVIERE / Restorer of the Society of Jesus in France in 1814 / 1735-1820 on the front of the bust and from the cast taken from the Servant of God after his death / Louis Morel / 1 ?18 on the back of the bust. H. 57 cm Slight chips, surface wear. Born under the Ancien Régime in 1735, Pierre Joseph Picot de Clorivière's career is inextricably linked to the historical vagaries and various political regimes of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He joined the Society of Jesus in 1756, but the congregation was dissolved by Clement XIV in 1772, one year after he had taken his vows. Despite this papal decision, the Jesuit remained deeply attached to the dogma of the Society. This is why, after years of exile and imprisonment, due to his religious commitment and his royalist relations (1793-1809), Clorivière was appointed to regroup the Jesuits of France, at the time of the restoration of the order by Pius VII in 1814. It is this last event that our bust celebrates. In his status as "restorer", Clorivière embodies the survival of the congregation. Our portrait is executed by Louis Morel, a student of Jean-Antoine Injalbert and a resident of the Ruche. He participated in the Salon des Artistes Français and followed Richard Guino, becoming his assistant.
