Gustav KLIMT (1862-1918) - Lot 33
Gustav KLIMT (1862-1918) Study for the Portrait of Fritza Riedler, painted in 1906 Blue pencil on paper. Stamp of the estate (reference Lugt 1575) at the bottom right. 65,5 x 49 cm Dr. Marian Bisanz-Prakken, Albertina Vienna, will include this drawing in her supplement to Alice Strobl's catalogue raisonné of Gustav Klimt's drawings. WORKS IN REPORT: twenty preparatory drawings for the painted portrait in the Vienna Belvedere (cf. Catalogue raisonné Klimt, Alice Strobl, Die Zeichnungen 1904-1912, 1226 to 1246, pp. 30 to 33). Fritza Riedler is a young woman of Viennese high society, wife of the rich and brilliant mechanical engineer Alois Riedler. Her portrait is, together with that of Adèle Bloch-Bauer, one of the masterpieces of Gustav Klimt's Golden Period. Monumentality, hieraticism, colourful and decorative sumptuousness are the result of Klimt's admiration for ancient and exotic arts during his visits to Viennese museums: murals from ancient Egypt, Greek black-figure vases, the linearity and flatness of Japanese prints, the gold of Byzantine mosaics. His great pictorial admiration is the colour of Velázquez and around Fritza's face we find the semicircular halo of the hairstyle of the infanta Maria Theresa in the Kunstmuseum.
