Eugène DELACROIX (1798-1863) Hercules and the Lion of Nemea, c. 1853 Pencil on tracing paper. Workshop stamp at the bottom center (Lugt N° 838a). Very fresh state of preservation. 20 x 18 cm Folds at the four corners, fold in the centre of the sheet, small tear (2 cm) at the top. WORKS IN REPORT: L'Œuvre complet d'Eugène Delacroix, Alfred Robaux, Éditions Hachette-BNF, p. 307 N° 1154 and 1131. This drawing is preparatory to one of the painted door and window tops representing the works of Hercules in the Salon de la Paix of the former Paris City Hall. It is one of the testimonies of the decoration commissioned from Delacroix and disappeared following the fire caused by the Communards on 24th May 1871.
