EASTERN FRANCE (Burgundy), early 13th century and later re-c - Lot 186
EASTERN FRANCE (Burgundy), early 13th century and later re-carved Sedes Majestae or Virgin in Majesty Strong oak wood relief, hollow back. Accidents, lacks, stripping of polychromy, old restorations. H. 74 cm This hieratic Virgin with the child sitting in a frontal position derives from an iconographic type of Virgins in Majesty that spread throughout the Auvergne and Burgundy regions during the Romanesque period. She has a narrow, elongated face topped by a crown and a veil mantle that falls very soberly on her shoulders. Christ, from the front, originally crowned, made a gesture of blessing with his right hand. This sculpture is similar to the canon of a Virgin from Arnay-le-Duc acquired in 2012 by the Beaune Museum of Fine Arts. The work has been largely reworked, probably because of its state of preservation: the underside shows burn marks and the surface was damaged by wormholes and galleries of wood-eating insects. The details of the faces and the neck of the Virgin's dress have been engraved, while the sculpture has mostly been recut and repolished.
