MASQUE FANG, Gabon - Lot 115
MASQUE FANG, Gabon Soft wood, kaolin, black pigments, nails, plant fibres. Mask alone H. 28.5 cm; total height 53 cm Face with slit eyes on either side of a straight nose, a small mouth in two parallel lines carved in a sober pattern, the ears described above. The top of the mask decorated with three wide braided headbands is tinted black, contrasting with the whiteness of the kaolin, which is still very present. Hiding the wearer, the fibre covering fortunately lasted. The detail of the cruciform motif on the cheeks, particularly the work of the mouth, are similar to the Fang Janus mask from the former Vérité collection (Left Bank Auction, 17 and 18 June 2006, reproduced under lot no. 498).
