MASQUE NTOMO BAMBARA, Mali - Lot 110
MASQUE NTOMO BAMBARA, Mali Wood with dark brown-black patina, metal, old accident and missing. H. 63 cm Comb" mask with eight vertical teeth inscribed at the top of a face treated in cubist lines, the small schematic mouth notched in the rectilinear volume and in high relief of the nose. The crescent-moon shaped ears are pierced with lobes, and were used to receive ancient pendants. Native restoration using wide staples along the left cheek. The Bamana jow or secret societies, on which the social and religious organization was based, each had its own masks. The ntomo society was distinguished by this type of face, surmounted by a series of spikes, with the masks dancing from village to village during the dry season, during agrarian festivals.
