HARPE ZANDE, Democratic Republic of Congo - Lot 107
HARPE ZANDE, Democratic Republic of Congo Wood with a brown to shiny black-brown patina, skin, blue seed beads, upholstery nail. L. 40 H. 25 cm The indented sound box is stretched with a ligatured skin. The neck is carved at the top with a neat face, the eyes adorned with two seed beads, an upholstered nail still present on the right side. Nice state of preservation. The refined shape of the whole instrument, which was played worn against the chest, and the very beautiful quality of the ornamental face carving, make it a fine example within a body of work that very soon caught the attention of Westerners.
