This African Head was executed by the renowned ethnographic sculptor, Georges Halbout during his stay at the Villa Abd-el-Tif in Algiers in 1930. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris and trained with Jean Boucher before sharing his studio with the sculptor Paul Belmondo at the cité Corot. He won the Abd-el-Tif prize in 1928. This prize, awarded by the Society of French Orientalist Painters, allowed young artists to stay for a year or two at the expense of the state in a boarding school in Algiers, following the example of the Villa Medicis or the Villa Velazquez. On his return to France, he also won many prizes, including the gold medal at the Salon des Artistes Français in 1938.
