A Berrichon sculptor, François Popineau was awarded a travel grant by the Conseil Supérieur des Beaux-Arts in 1924 and his first gold medal at the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts. He presented this bronze figure of a young oriental woman for the first time at the Exhibition of the Société Coloniale des Artistes Français and at the Bernheim Jeune gallery in November 1927, then again in 1930 and 1935. He also exhibited Messaouda at the Exposition Coloniale Internationale de Paris 1931 and at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels in 1935.
