Ferdinand PARPAN (1902-2004) - Lot 85
Ferdinand PARPAN (1902-2004) Dancing couple, 1945-1950 Bronze proof, n°1/8 Blanchet lost wax casting Founder's mark and numbering (on the back on the edge of the terrace): Blanchet Fondeur 1/8 Signed and monogrammed (on the base on the back right): FP F.PARPAN 57.8 x 38.1 x 15.2 cm BIBLIOGRAPHIE : - Levêque, Ferdinand Parpan sculpteur, Paris, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 1989, repr. p. 106. - Jean-Charles Hachet, Ferdinand Parpan, L'intuition des formes, Paris, Somogy éditions d'art, 2001, repr. cover and p. 152. Trained in his father's workshop as an ornamental sculptor, Ferdinand Parpan assisted him in the 1920s before receiving his first religious commissions around 1930. Gradually, his art was stripped down, seeking the essential line, after having been marked by cubist sculpture in particular. Faithful to figurative art, he also created several series of animal sculptures. After 1945, he took part in numerous group exhibitions and regularly exhibited at the Salon de l'Art Libre. As a sculptor on wood, stone and marble, Parpan edited many of his bronze sculptures, very often worked in series: women, musicians, dancers. Around 1945, he started a series around the figure of the dancer, among which the Dancing Couple, with dynamic lines, is one of the most representative models. The work is reproduced on the cover of the monographic work that Somogy Editions dedicated to him in 2001.
