Little Maggy is one of the studies preceding the realization in 1912 of the Maggy bust, portrait of Mrs. Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes by the artist Duchamp-Villon. This self-taught artist, who belonged to the Duchamp siblings, exhibited from the beginning of the 20th century in many salons, was appointed member of the jury of the sculpture section of the 1907 Salon d'automne and played a leading role in the advent of cubism. Fascinated by anatomy, he tends here, in this preparatory wax study, to simplify the face of this woman while amplifying her features. The plaster of Maggy of 1912 was then used as a model for several bronze editions.
