The German sculptor Bernhard Hoetger trained at the academy in Düsseldorf. From 1900, he moved to Paris for seven years, during which he participated in the foundation of the Salon d'Automne in 1905. He also exhibited at the Indépendants. Then, on his return to Germany, he was appointed master of the Darmstadt artists' colony and wanted to integrate sculptural groups into architectural ensembles. His work is part of the German expressionist movement where artists transcribe social problems. Bernhard Hoetger models deformed bodies in order to externalize feelings about morphologies.
