H. 36 cm LITERATURE IN RAPPORT : - Dieter Golücke Bernhard Hoetger : Bildhaeur, Maler, Baukünstler, Designer, Germany, Worpsweder, 1984, reproduction p. 11 ; - Florence Rionnet, Les Bronzes Barbedienne. The work of a dynasty of founders (1834-1954), Paris, Arthena, 2016, model listed under cat. no. 1231, p. 399. Le Charbonnier, presented at the 1903 Salon under no. 806, is part of a group of works around the Workers in 1902. Bernhard Hoetger was concerned about the working class' working conditions and represented the strength of the working class through this man with developed muscles. On December 28, 1938, Eugène Blot gave the drawing rights for this model to the Maison Barbedienne. The German sculptor Bernhard Hoetger trained at the Düsseldorf academy. From 1900, he moved to Paris for seven years during which he participated in the foundation of the Salon d'Automne in 1905. He also exhibited at the Indépendants. Then, on his return to Germany, he was appointed master of the Darmstadt artists' colony and wanted to integrate sculptural groups into architectural ensembles. His work is part of the German expressionist movement where artists transcribe social problems. Bernhard Hoetger models deformed bodies in order to externalize feelings about morphologies.
