H. 71 cm WORKS AT RAPPORT : Joseph Bernard, Faune dansant, 1912, bronze with an antique green patina, H. 185 x W. 78.5 x P. 46.5, Paris, Musée d'Orsay, inv. RF 4610. LITERATURE AT RAPPORT : René Jullian, Joseph Bernard, Paris, Fondation de Coubertin, 1989, model listed under n°189, p.312, pp.133-139. This important bronze work entitled Faune Dansant (Dancing Fauna) testifies to the predilection of the Viennese sculptor (Isère) Joseph Bernard for the theme of dance. He intensively explored this subject, of which La frise de la Danse, carved directly in marble, was the masterpiece (kept in Paris, Musée d'Orsay, n°inv.RF.3514) in the years 1910-1920. He also produced a number of small groups edited in bronze, such as Danse des roses, Couple dansant, les Deux danseuses, that is to say a large number of young girls, stylized, simple and feminine, animated by a beautiful emotion. He also shapes solid, balanced figures, vibrating with a sense of rhythm reflecting the immediacy of the movement. Faune dansant, one of his rare isolated figures, is said to have been born from the 1912 performance at the Châtelet Theatre of the ballet L'après-midi d'un Faune performed by the famous dancer Vaslav Nijinski. In keeping with the creative habit of the artist, who likes to create different versions of the same model in an intellectual journey of achievement, Faune dansant was performed from 1912 onwards in three dimensions, the last of which resulted in its life-size version (cf. work kept at the Musée d'Orsay). Our bronze corresponds to the second version. The original edition includes 25 copies, but the number of prints is still uncertain, probably about ten. Our copy bears the n°5.
