Maillol discovered his passion for statuary art at the end of the 1890s. He began by sculpting figurines in wood, then in clay. Unlike his later works, these statuettes were not made from nature and no model posed for the artist: "I did all this without a model. I made all my statuettes without a model, without even a drawing. I made them like that, didn't I, I made them up entirely.
