UHUNMWUNEKHUE BELT MASK, Benin - Lot 441
UHUNMWUNEKHUE BELT MASK, Benin
Copper alloy.
H. 17.5 cm
PROVENANCE : following the family tradition, acquired from Simone de Monbrison, Paris, in the 1970s
Belt mask from Benin, decorated with a collar surrounding the lower part of the face, while on the forehead is a band and then a fishnet, reminiscent of the coral bead masks worn by high dignitaries. The large eyeballs are surmounted by keloids, mouth and nose treated in full volumes.
Fixed above the belt, this type of emblem was reserved for the notables or iverhuan of the three brotherhoods sitting next to the Oba.
