Daniel SABATER Y SALABERT (1888-1951) La Divilidad del Rey, 1947 Oil on canvas. Signed lower left. Signed, located Paris, dated and titled on the back. 38 x 55 cm A native of Valencia, he studied the great Spanish masters at the Prado de Madrid: Velasquez, Ribera and Goya. From 1912, he stays in Paris where he performs religious compositions for the Little Sisters of Saint Vincent de Paul. His inspiration is strongly indebted to the tragic and grotesque that have been scattered throughout his history in Spanish painting. On the fringes of the avant-garde, he was called "the painter of witches" in the 20th century. Bibliography : Max Daireaux , SABATER painter of witches , PARIS The ensemble was acquired directly from the artist in the late 1940s or early 1950s.
