RARE Rare black lacquered softwood frame with stencilled, gi - Lot 235
RARE Rare black lacquered softwood frame with stencilled, gilded decoration of foliated scrolls, fleurons and HDC monograms, alternating, presumed to be by Henri II and Catherine de Medici. Last third of the 16th century. Overall H. 89 W. 78.5 cm View H. 63.5 W. 53 cm On the back, ex-libris by Marie-Thérèse de La Béraudière, and loan label from the Fogg Art Museum. After the death of Henry II in 1559, Catherine de Medici had the royal numeral changed. She made the C more legible by making it exceed the amount of the H. The queen suffered, in fact, from the ambiguity of the initial figure which had been abused by Diane de Poitiers, the favourite, since it could easily read H and D!
