Assigned to PATEL - Lot 52
Assigned to PATEL Mercury and Beaten Canvas. L. 57.5 cm On the back, an old label with the number 50. Missings, lifts and old restorations. The subject is taken from Ovid's Metamorphoses (II, verses 685-697). Battus is an elderly shepherd who saw Mercury stealing Apollo's flocks. Fearing to be betrayed, the god bought his silence by offering him an animal and then tested him: having changed his appearance, he questioned Battus by offering him another animal. Battus did not resist and delivered the secret. To punish him, Mercury turned him into a rock. Francisque Millet treated the subject in a painting kept at the Musée d'Orléans and long misinterpreted as Mercury and Argus, as well as in a painting kept at the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
