Francis SMITH - Lot 120
Francis SMITH (Lisbon 1881 - Paris 1961) A lunch on the grass in Portugal Gouache 45.5 x 37 cm Signed lower right Francis Smith Born in Portugal to English parents, Francisco Smith was divided between his native country and France. Arriving in Paris in 1907 to perfect his training, he became involved with Foujita and Kisling. He married the sculptor Yvonne Mortier and chose to Frenchize his first name. In 1911, he organized his first exhibition in Lisbon. There are already Portuguese or Parisian themes that he will paint all his life. Most of Francis' work consists of the Mediterranean or Portuguese landscapes of his childhood, for which he had nostalgia. He recreated simple and sentimental scenes from Lisbon's working class neighbourhoods and the rural life he kept in his memory.
